5 New Movies Releasing On OTT Platforms For R-Day – Bro Daddy Leads The Pack

Republic Day, which is a national holiday in the country, gave filmmakers a window to push new releases to OTT platforms mid-week. And while there’s a slew of new releases, you can rest assured there’ll be our usual column on what and where to catch the movies.

This week’s column features films from South India – three in Malayalam, and each in Telugu and Kannada. Of the five, only one is a straight-to-OTT release, the other four have made their way to theaters.

The five films we have selected are: Rascal of Badava in Kannada, and Arjuna Phalguna in Telugu. Films in Malayalam include Aaha, Ellam Sheriyakum, and the biggest release of the season, brother dad. The last named carries all the buzz and expectation. Like every week, a few additional films may also be shown unannounced or without fanfare.

Ellam Sheriyakum

Quick Details

Director: Jibu Jacob

To throw: Asif Ali, Rajisha Vijayan, Sidhic

Language: Malayalam

Platform: Zee5

Release date: January 26, 2022.

Synopsis: The Malayalam film industry made robust and meaty political films in the 80s and 90s. But the trend slowly declined as the country’s politics also underwent a sea change. These days, it’s hard to make a movie in the genre without sparking a controversy or two. Last year the Mammootty star had the movie One it was about politicians. But the film kind of pulled through, and the political element in it was lukewarm.

Ellam Sheriyakum is an emotional drama in a political context. It is the story of the daughter of a great politician who runs away with a young worker from an opposition party. The film focuses on detailing the face-to-face between the two men for the power and affection of the same woman.

Movies from the 80s managed to flesh out enjoyable drama by mixing personal and political in acceptable proportions. This film also attempts the same thing.

Naughty Badava

Quick Details

Director: Guru Shankar

To throw: Dhananjay, Amrutha Iyengar, Nagabhushan, Rangayana Raghu

Language: Canada

Platform: Voot selection

Release date: January 26, 2022.

Synopsis: Thanks to the arrival of OTT platforms, Kannada films — generally considered the weakest of the four film industries in the South — seem to have found their voice. They seem to be much more confident and unapologetic when it comes to displaying their regional ethos and unique mores. Two weeks ago we saw Garuda Gamana Vrishaba Vahana. It was basically Kannada in spirit, even speaking of a universal emotion. This movie is also about a rowdy gang. But the spirit of this one is decidedly different. His tone is larky and light, and also more self-aware.

The story basically revolves around a middle-class man kidnapped by a gang because he is in love with a politician’s daughter. But the fun here is that he forces them to rethink their decisions by telling his life story of friendship, love, breakup, family feelings. It’s sort of a weird coming-of-age movie. Dhanajay, who we recently saw in the Telugu film Pushpa, is the leader here, and it’s his home production.

Arjuna Phalguna

Quick Details

Director: Teja Marni

To throw: Sree Vishnu, Amritha Aiyer

Language: telugu

Platform: Haha

Release date: January 26, 2022.

Synopsis: Movies with historical names are not new in Telugu. Arjuna Phalguna is a crime comedy that attempts to pull off a fun ride that Brochevarevarura managed a few years ago. This film is the spiritual elder of this one. At the heart here too is a group of friends and a bag full of currency.

The film places a lot of emphasis on friendship and the feel-good fervor that comes with it. The film may not have the weight of Brochevarevarura, but he makes up for it by being sufficiently faithful to the cultural milieu in which he finds himself. The native slang that the protagonists speak is worth remembering because it is pleasant and precise. Although a bit predictable, the film has its heart in the right place.

Quick Details

Director: Bibin Paul Samuel

To throw: Indrajith Sukumaran, Amit Chakkalakal, Ashwin Kumar, Manoj K Jayan, Santhy Balachandran

Language: Malayalam

Platform: Zee5

Release date: January 26, 2022.

Synopsis: Vadamvali, which is tug of war in Malayalam, is quite a big sport in Kerala. The film is inspired by a very popular tug of war team from the 80s and 90s “Aaha Neeloor”. The team was usually made up of manual hands from the rubber plantations that Kerala is famous for. These workers did hard work in the morning and tried their hand at this difficult sport at night. It was a kind of subculture in the upper regions of the western ghats.

Haha uses these tropes for a sports drama film while providing succinct social commentary on caste division, hostility towards migrants, and other forms of social segregation that strangely nestle in this otherwise open and liberal land. the wanderer (rope) is, in a sense, a tool of release for the heavy hitters in the macho sport.

brother dad

Quick Details

Director: Prithviraj Sukumaran

To throw: Mohanlal, Prithviraj Sukumran, Meena, Kalyani Priyadarshan, Lalu Alex, Murali Gopy, Kaniha, Soubin

Language: Malayalam

Platform: Disney+ Hotstar

Release date: January 26, 2022.

Synopsis: A film starring Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran, two of the biggest stars in the industry, releasing directly on an OTT platform is big news in itself. The film gets a new boost from being directed by Prithviraj himself. This is his second outing as a director after the 2019 film Lucifer, which also had Mohanlal in mind. But it was a crime thriller, whereas it is a family comedy. The promos all projected the film as a joyful ride involving an ageless son and father. Prithviraj and Mohanlal play the son-father combo, their natural chemistry seems most agreeable.

Because, Prithviraj, this is his fourth consecutive direct OTT release after Case closed, kurti and Brahman. It is doubtful that any other top star in India has had such continuous releases straight to the OTT. Kudos to Prithviraj for consistently placing his faith in the emerging medium.

The film is produced by Antony Perumbavoor, who has a large cast of Mohanlal stars gearing up for the release. Antony also happens to play a role as a cop in brother dad.
