There are eight new movies to check out this week!

This week we see Liam Neeson killing bad guys, a high school rom-com, and maybe the mystery of Marilyn Monroe’s death solved.

Here’s the recap of the new movies hitting theaters this week, as well as those hitting major streaming platforms.

Memory (2022)

Release date: In theaters nationwide Friday, April 29, 2022.

Summary: Memory is about a hitman, Alex (Liam Neeson), who becomes a target himself after refusing to complete a job for a notorious criminal organization. Now Alex must track down the people who hired him. However, Alex is hampered by a memory that begins to falter, blurring the lines between good and evil.

To monitor: The film is based on the Belgian film The memory of a killer (2003).

word on the street: The cast includes Monica Bellucci, Guy Pearce and Ray Stevenson.

my catch: Monica Bellucci was in both The Matrix Reloaded (2003) and The matrix revolutions (2003) as Persephone.

Crush

Heartbreak (2022)

Release date: Premiering on Hulu on Friday, April 29, 2022.

Summary: In Crush, Page (Rowan Blanchard) is a talented art student in her senior year of high school. In order to be close to his “crush”, Gabby. Page joins the track team. Though Page stinks on the trail, she’s about to find out that love can be complicated when she discovers she’s falling for someone else, Gabby’s sister AJ (Auli’i Cravalho ).

To monitor: Rowan Blanchard is best known for his role as Riley in the television series A girl meets the world.

word on the street: Auli’i Cravalho made his film debut in his award-winning role as the lead in the Disney musical Moana (2016).

my catch: I love that Megan Mullally plays Page’s wise mother in the film.

The mystery of Marilyn Monroe

The mystery of Marilyn Monroe: the unreleased tapes (2022)

Evaluation: TV-MA

Release date: Premiere on the Netflix platform on April 27, 2022.

Summary: The life and death of Marilyn Monroe has fascinated the world. The Marilyn Monroe Mystery: Unreleased Tapes is a documentary that explores the end of the icon with unpublished interviews of Marilyn and her entourage. Will these previously secret tapes reveal Marilyn’s mystery?

To monitor : Many interviews come from a 1992 inquest into his death after the case was reopened.

word on the street: The film promises to explore the connection between Monroe and President Kennedy in depth.

my catch: Between that and the next film produced by Brad Pitt Blondwith Ana de Armas, you could say that 2022 is the year of Marilyn Monroe.

Hatching (2022)

Release date: In select theaters Friday, April 29, 2022.

Summary: Hatching is about a young gymnast desperately trying to please her demanding mother. After a bird breaks into their house and is killed, the gymnast finds a lonely egg in the nearby forest. Then she takes the egg and keeps it warm and safe until it hatches. Which hatches will change his family forever.

To monitor: The film is the feature debut of Finnish director Hanna Bergholm, known for her award-winning short films, including the 2018 film Puppet master.

word on the street: The film was recently nominated for awards at the Cleveland International Film Festival and the Miami Film Festival.

my catch: I’m always ready for a good horror movie.

Bird of Fire

Firebird (2021)

Release date: In select theaters Friday, April 22, 2022.

Summary: Set in the late 1970s in communist Russia, Bird of Fire is about Sergey (Tom Prior), who dreams of becoming an actor in Moscow. Waiting for the day when he will be discharged from service, Sergey is assigned to a Soviet air base where he meets Roman (Oleg Zagorodnii), a dashing fighter pilot. Driven by their undeniable attraction, the two navigate the precarious line between love and friendship at a time when Soviet men in uniform caught having a sexual affair were harshly punished.

To monitor: The film won the Audience Award at the 2021 Austin International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.

word on the street: This is the first narrative feature film from director Peeter Rebane, known for his documentaries Tashi Delek! (2015), and Robbie Williams: Fan trip to Tallinn (2014).

my catch: I saw this film at the Out on Film Festival in Atlanta.

Anais in love

Anaïs in love (2021)

Evaluation: N / A

Release date: In select theaters Friday, April 29, 2022 and on video on demand May 6, 2022.

Summary: Anais in love tells the story of a 30-year-old woman (Anaïs Demoustier) who flounders through life. She meets Daniel (Denis Podalydes), an older man who almost instantly falls in love with her. However, Daneil lives with his longtime girlfriend, a writer named Emilie (Valeria Bruni Tedeschi). Anaïs becomes obsessed with Emilie and makes it her mission to make Emilie fall in love with her.

To monitor: The film had its world premiere at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival.

word on the street: Anaïs Demoustier is best known for her roles in The snows of Kilimanjaro (2011) and Alice and the Mayor (2019).

my catch: I love the trailer for this unconventional romantic comedy.

Charlotte

Charlotte (2021)

Release date: In select theaters Friday, April 29, 2022.

Summary: Charlotte tells the story of a young German-Jewish painter who comes of age in Berlin on the eve of World War II. Charlotte dreams of becoming a famous artist but realizes that her world is changing rapidly and dangerously, and she leaves Berlin for the safety of southern France. She finds a new love and starts painting again, but a family secret threatens her work and her life.

To monitor: The outstanding voice cast includes Keira Knightley, Brenda Blethyn, Sam Claflin, Marion Cotillard, Jim Broadbent and Eddie Marsan.

word on the street: Keira Knightley and Marion Cotillard are both executive producers of the film.

My opinion: I love the fact that this animated film is based on a true story.

The sound of violet

Violet’s Sound (2022)

Evaluation: PG-13

Release date: In select theaters Friday, April 29, 2022.

Summary: In The sound of violet, Shawn (Cason Thomas) wants to find a wife, but he’s shy and has autism, which causes him to speak his mind, sometimes at the wrong time. His brother takes him to a party where he meets Violet (Cora Cleary), a young woman who calls herself an actress and is amused by Shawn and his outlook on life. The only problem in this relationship is that Violet isn’t an actress…she’s a “working woman.”

To monitor: The film won Best Screenplay at the Las Vegas International Film Festival.

word on the street: The film is based on an award-winning novel of the same name by the film’s writer/director, Allen Wolf.

my catch: I really liked Allan Wolf’s first film, In my sleepwhich featured some of my favorites, Lacey Chabert and Abigail Spencer.
