Song Kang Ho (Parasite, The king of drugs, Broker) portrays a veteran cop named In-ho who cancels a trip to Hawaii because of work. His wife, however, goes through with the planned vacation.

Alas, the flight meant to lead to a Hawaiian getaway suddenly becomes a terror flight as another passenger begins coughing up blood and then meets a gruesome death, for an unknown reason.

Unable to escape from a plane that has already taken off, not only the passengers but also the flight crew are unable to avert the slowly looming disaster. On the ground, In-ho receives information about a man threatening a terrorist attack against a plane.

Realizing that the man and his wife boarded the same flight and becoming aware that the plane is refused landing anywhere, In-ho devotes everything he has to solving the crisis.

Lee Byung Hun (The man standing beside, ash fall, Heart Keys) plays Jae-hyuk, a man who suffers from aerophobia but still flies for the sake of his daughter who needs medical attention. And now that their lives are all in danger, Jae-hyuk’s mettle will be tested.

Jeon Do Yeon (Beasts Clawing Straws, ash fall, A man and a woman) is Sook-hee, the Minister of Transport who has the overwhelming responsibility of ensuring the safety of flight KI501 which is currently traveling between countries.

Kim Nam Gil (The Closet, The Odd Family: Zombie on Sale, Memoire of a Murderer) stars as Hyun-soo, the co-pilot who must land the plane safely at all costs. Staying in close contact with the crisis management center on the ground, he does his best to keep the plane in the air, but with no solution in sight, he finds himself having to make an “emergency declaration”.

I am Siwan (the ruthless, A line, A melody to remember) plays Jin-seok, the cause of all the chaos. After strolling through Incheon International Airport and requesting a flight with the most passengers, Jin-seok boards flight KI501. With his innocent face, no one would have guessed what evil deed he was capable of.

Kim So Jin (Escape from MogadishuSong of Spring, The Man Standing Beside) plays Hee-jin, the chief flight attendant. She is thinking of concluding her career in the sky after this flight. But will she even live after that? Would she be able to save lives if this was the last flight of her life?

Park Hae Joon (The 8th night, Take me home, believing) plays Tae-Su, the head of the presidential crisis management center who is expected to make the most realistic decisions for
protect the nation during this unprecedented disaster.

As news of the bioterrorism on the plane leaves the general public reeling, Tae-su is forced to choose between the safety of passengers and crew or the safety of those on the ground. So many lives depend on him.

Director Han Jae-Rim wrote the screenplay in 2019, before the Corona virus pandemic. In a statement he released, he said: “I couldn’t help but be shocked to see the events I had imagined in my mind come true.”

“Disasters always strike when you least expect them. Those of us living in this time are already used to how easily people lose their strength and become self-absorbed in the midst of disaster or crisis. But despite the upheavals humanity is facing during this pandemic, the situation is slowly improving. I hope this film can bring some comfort and hope to those who suffered from this tragedy, to those who bravely fought it and to all of us who, at this moment, are exhausted from facing the pandemic.

“Declaration of Emergency” premiered at the 74th Cannes Film Festival in 2021 in the non-competitive section of the event. Watch it from August 31 in cinemas nationwide!
