The movie, Commis III and more

Want a nostalgic hit from the 90s? You’re lucky! This week’s new movies on VOD include Clerk III, which brings back some of the most iconic characters from Kevin Smith’s View Askewniverse and has them crafted, what else? An independent film about working in a video store. If that’s all a little too meta for you, check out one of the many horror movies coming out this week, including Spirit Halloween: The Moviewhich is exactly what the title says, or maybe try an indie horror movie like Old man.

The new thriller, which has nothing to do with the Jeff Bridges TV series The old manstars Avatar‘s Stephen Lang as a man who has lived in an isolated cabin until a lost hiker named Joe (Marc Senter) comes to him asking for help. As an old man, Lang is menacing and scary, but he also fears that Joe is out to harm him. Are either of these men a danger to the other, or are they both a bit paranoid? That’s the real question here, and you’ll find the answer at the end.

These are just a few of the titles available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Find out now which films are available for purchase or rental on demand!

1994 Kevin Smith movie Clerks is a perfect encapsulation of its time. The indie film about a pair of video store clerks, Dante and Randal (Brian O’Halloran and Jeff Anderson) is a cult classic, partly because of the film itself and its memorable (and dirty) script, and because partly because of the tradition around its low-budget production. Clerk III is less a sequel in the Clerks franchise and more of a meta homage to the original movie. In this new film, Randal, having suffered a heart attack, wants to make a low-budget independent film about his working life in a video store, just like Smith did, and many details and plot points of the film are sly references to how the original film was made – the biggest difference here is the fact that, unlike the original film, this new film is full of Hollywood stars making cameos throughout.

I’m pretty sure the plot of Spirit Halloween: The Movie is the greatest premise for a movie of all time; three young friends find themselves trapped in a Spirit Halloween store, and while they’re inside, a malevolent spirit brings all the animatronic characters to life to terrorize them. (I should note that the film was actually produced by the people who run the Spirit Halloween stores, and I’m glad to see that they fully embrace the terror caused by animatronics.) Doc Brown himself, Christopher Lloyd , is one of the stars, and he’s joined by Rachael Leigh Cook and Marla Gibbs. And the running time is a very cool 81 minutes. Literally every box on my “what I want from a movie” bingo card is ticked.
